This menu is a tool for you to use to explore opportunities at Mines outside of the classroom. These are not requirements, but rather recommendations to help you leverage what Mines has to offer. Just like at a restaurant, choose what looks best to you and start from there! This menu can help you create your own pathway and customize your experience during your time at Mines.

The activities are placed in specific years below based off staff and faculty recommendations, but you can participate in most of them at any time. There is never a wrong time to get involved if you’re looking, and no pressure to do any of these things!

Get to know Civil Engineering

Civil engineering students focus on planning, design, construction, operations and renewal of essential infrastructure that benefit society, including bridges, buildings, tunnels, earth retaining systems, roads, rail, wind and solar farms, dams, data centers and the power grid. Civil engineering professionals lead in sustainable development, advancing innovative solutions to advance society but without impact future generations’ ability to do so. Students in Civil Engineering explore soil and rock behavior, structural theory, steel and concrete structures and their foundations in the ground, construction principles, with a broad range of technical electives including surveying, construction engineering, underground construction, environmental engineering, water resources and hydrologic engineering. Students use sophisticated tools to predict the behavior of complex systems, applying the latest in numerical analysis, computer-aided design, project scheduling, and cost control. A Civil Engineering degree from Mines offers great breadth, with outstanding career opportunities in many areas, including Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources and Hydrology, Transportation and Development and Utility Infrastructure Design.

  • Start to request letters of recommendation 
  • Check your degree evaluation each semester to ensure you are on-track for your graduation goals. Work with your CASA advisor for any questions. 

Fourth Year

  • Take CSM 350: Special Studies in Leadership & Small Group Dynamics in the Spring Semester
